Harvesting health: Exploring native forest thinning and cool burning

Join Private Forests Tasmania for an insightful visit to a native forest thinning site at Sassafras, where sustainable forest management is actively enhancing forest health and productivity.
The Sassafras property, located on the Bass Highway just south of Sassafras, is owned by Dallas and Scott Rockliff, mixed farming enterprise owners who manage both vegetable crops and cattle adjacent to the forest. Their long-term goal is to actively manage their forest for high-value timber production. This thinning operation aims to improve forest quality and health for future sawlog production while generating immediate income from thinnings.

- Location: Starts at Hamilton Room, Latrobe Council, 18 Hamilton Street, Latrobe, and finishes on-site at Sassafras.
Sassafras Site Overview: The Sassafras thinning coupe covers 35 hectares of native regrowth forest, dominated by Eucalyptus species. The site is densely stocked, with trees averaging 25-30 metres in height, following clearfell harvesting in the 1970s. This operation will thin the forest to around 50 percent of its current density, optimising forest health, enhancing resilience to environmental stresses, and promoting faster growth of the remaining trees.
The Sassafras site also contains environmental protections, including streamside reserves to protect the habitat of the Giant Freshwater Crayfish.
