Private native forestry field day - Sassafras

Posted 27 February 2023

Greenwood Strategy is pleased to be working with Private Forests Tasmania, landowners and the Tasmanian forestry industry to develop information to support private native foresters in delivering sustainable and profitable solutions to improve forest and ecosystem health and support farm profitability.

The first of two field days was held on 20 February at the 35-hectare Sassafras native forest thinning coupe located on the Bass Highway just south of Sassafras. The landowner has a long-term vision to develop multi-aged forest for ongoing timber production with the current thinning operation, conducted by Midway Limited, to improve the quality of the forest for future sawlog production while generating immediate income from thinnings.

Sawlogs from this site are expected to generate from $68 to $93 per tonne and pulp logs from $13 to $23 dependent upon species and log quality.

The event was attended by 25 persons including landowners and industry experts discussing native forest management, planning, harvesting, markets, supply chains and regulation.

A ‘Sustainable, profitable native forest management, grower to market’ case study has been produced for this event and is available under our Publications, native forest management tab.

The second field day will be held on Monday 27 March 2023 at Levendale in the States south. Please RSVP to admin@pft.tas.gov.au or phone 1300 661 009.
